Hernandez, dubbed, King Oscar by some of his fans, has taken Houston by storm by marching into the semifinals taking out 2006 Houston champ Mardy Fish in the process.
These two have played once before, in the Bermuda Challenger back in 2006, just after Fish had won Houston. The result? Oscar Hernandez def. Mardy Fish 6-4, 7-6.
In the first set, Hernandez was incredible. Sure, Fish served at an abysmal 39%, but Oscar was able to take advantage of all the second serves he saw, winning 60% of said points. Fish wasn't able to get into any kind of a groove on his or Hernandez's serve, as the Spaniard was on fire. He lost just 3 points on his serve in the opening set, 2 from double faults. He was able to break Fish twice to take the first set 6-2.
The second set started out more of the same. Hernandez's serving stats were out of this world and he got up 4-1. Hernandez had only lost 5 points on serve, 2 being double faults up to that point. Then the rollercoaster set its course. A few breaks back and forth landed Hernandez serving for the match at 5-4. He seemed to have lost the plot at that point and some silly errors gave Fish back the break for 5-5. In the tiebreak, Fish got up to a 5-4 and 2 points on his serve to win the set, but was unable to hold it as Hernandez was able to battle back and take it 7-5.
After the match, Fish made reference to the fact that the fumes from the concession stand grill had wafted over above the center court due to the wind. The American “felt like he was playing in a bar” and that he “would love to be able to breathe”. Hernandez seemed unaffected by the smell, as he commented that “it just made me hungry”.
Hernandez will play James Blake in the semifinals on Saturday.
Good win for Hernandez as he reaches his first ATP level semifinal.
Fish's level wasn't his best, and serving at 39% in a set on clay simply won't get the job done.

Did you know that... James Blake is good friends with John Mayer, an American singer who he attended high school with.
