Nikolay Davydenko is into the title match of the Orange Warsaw Open after dispatching Fabio Fognini in straight sets. Davydenko awaits either Tommy Robredo or Juan Monaco.
Nikolay Davydenko rolled over Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 15 minutes on Saturday to reach the Warsaw final. It will be Davydenko's third final appearance already in 2008, having won titles in Miami and Poertschach and finishing runner-up in Estoril.
The outcome was never in doubt against Fognini. Davydenko absolutely dominated the first set, especially on serve. He won 12 of 13 first-serve points and allowed his opponent a total of just five return points won. The Italian had to be flawless with his own serve in order to stay competitive but that was far from the case. Davydenko jumped all over Fognini's serve--even his first deliveries--and converted two of six break chances.
Fognini, however, did not give up and he made the Russian work a little bit harder in set two. He started winning a few more points against Davydenko's serve but his own serve remained almost a hindrance rather than a weapon. The No. 1 seed continued to take returns early, allowing him to gain the upper hand early in points and consistently dictate play from the back of the court. Davydenko secured one break as the set progressed to 5-3 with Fognini serving to stay in the match, and in fitting fashion Davydenko closed out the proceedings with yet another break.
After playing four straight unseeded opponents to reach the final, Davydenko will meet either No. 2 seed Tommy Robredo or third-seeded Juan Monaco for the title on Sunday. Davydenko holds a 4-2 series edge over Robredo and has a 2-1 advantage in head-to-head battles against Monaco.
Two straight dominant performances by Davydenko, who in the past often lets underdog opponents hang around too long.
Fognini has now won just seven games in two ATP semifinal appearances this season, but it's still good experience and it was a great tournament for the 21-year-old.
