Tommy Robredo gets past Juan Monaco in straight sets in the Orange Warsaw Open semifinals to set up a blockbuster title match against Nikolay Davydenko. Robredo will be playing his first final of 2008.
Tommy Robredo ensured that the Warsaw final will feature the tournament's top two seeds when he defeated Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 30 minutes on Saturday afternoon. Robredo will take on No. 1 seed and fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko for the title tomorrow.
Although it took just two sets, Monaco stayed right in it the entire time and had chances up until the very end. Robredo broke in the fifth game of the match but did not make things easy on himself the rest of the way. Monaco got back on serve briefly only to see the Spaniard break right back to go up 5-4 with a chance to serve out the set. Robredo had to save break points but he finally finished off the game and the set to take an early advantage.
The second frame of play progressed in almost the exact same way. Robredo secured another early break of serve, but again encountered trouble in almost every single one of his service games. The Argentine simply could not capitalize on his myriad chances. Robredo saved all six of the break points he faced in set two and he even stormed back from 0-40 down while serving for the match at 5-4.
Rarely do 6-4, 6-4 decisions come any closer than this one, especially with the second set. The only real difference was that Robredo put in far more first serves than his opponent and that allowed him to play the crucial points better. And crucial points are exactly to what this match boiled down. Robredo saved an incredible 10 of 11 break points; Monaco did not save any of the three he faced.
The two finalists have squared off on six previous occasions and Davydenko holds a 4-2 edge over Robredo. On clay, however, the series is all tied up at two.
