There's a real sense of purpose about Roger Federer this week, the Swiss is determined to rejuvenate his season with what he sees as one of the ultimate prizes in tennis. Tomas Berdych was not going to derail the Federer express for a second time
He has stated his intention of playing London 2012 but by then, Federer will be over 30 and possibly past his peak. As far as Olympic gold goes, this could be Bejing or bust
4 years ago the dream ended in tears at the hands of a free-swinging teenage Czech. Now an established force, Berdych was brushed aside 6-3, 7-6(4)
Some feared the worst when the world number 1 was broken early in the first set but those fears didn't last long. A fist pumping Federer roared back to level and then secured a 2nd break for 5-3
Berdych showed a lot more belief today than in many of his recent matches with Federer especially in the slams and he served extremely well overall. He will have been annoyed not to have consolidated his early break in set 2 a little more as then the match could have become interesting. Instead Federer got back into it and as he is capable of, took the match away from Berdych in the tiebreak with some sensational shot-making
Federer breathed a huge sigh of relief afterwards, acknowledging just how good Berdych is “”I'm very happy with the way I played. I haven't lost to him since the Olympic Games in 2004 but he's always dangerous, you can see how hard he hits the ball.“
Federer tried (unsuccessfully) to play down the importance of that loss in Athens but he made an important point in how that match may have affected Berdych even more as it thrust him into the spotlight before he was ready.

Did you know that... The record for most number of Grand Slam tournaments played is 56 and held by South African Wayne Ferreira.
