Two weeks ago Tomas Berdych made an early masters series exit slipping to a 3 set defeat in the heat of Cincinnati to the Italian Andreas Seppi. Two weeks later in similar conditions, Berdych rose to the challenge and sealed revenge 6-3, 7-6
The Czech no 1 just sneaked into the seeding spots and has made the most of the opportunity so far. He was very clinical on serve against Seppi, hitting 14 aces
Gilles Simon ground down Argentina's Guillermo Canas. The Bejing courts are probably a little too fast for Canas' liking but the humidity and heat are tailor-made for Canas' attritional style. However today he ran into anothe man happiest when on the counter-punch and Simon simply did it better, coming through 7-5, 6-1
James Blake was surprisingly tested by Domnik Hrbaty, needing 3 sets before winning 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Blake's backhand was superb in round 1 against Guccione but today he just had one of those “no-compromise” days where he was just going to tee off on everything no matter what and thanks to a rising unforced error count and Hrbaty's nous, it almost cost him
Blake continued to be in upbeat mood though post-match on a day where 6 American made it through to the last 16 “Hopefully it continues Wednesday and the next day,” he said. “And hopefully some of us will hear the national anthem at the end of the week.”
