Frenchman Gael Monfils took care of countryman Julien Benneteau to reach the quarterfinals in Nottingham.
In what could be the beginning of a new chapter in Gael Monfils' career, the Frenchman advanced to his second consecutive quarter-final. He raced to the semi-finals two weeks ago at Roland Garros, where he tested Roger Federer before going down in four sets. Several years ago, when Monfils first burst onto the tennis scene, he was considered a promising young star and possible contender for the very top ranks of the sport. His star has been generally outshone by contemporaries such as Novak Djokovic, Richard Gasquet and Andy Murray. But perhaps all of that is changing.
Monfils had a rocky start against Benneteau. He served at a quite dismal 50% and gave Benneteau the opportunity ( the only opportunity, as it turns out) at a break, which Benneteau happily took advantage of. He got himself together in the second set, however. His serving percentage climbed back up to 79% and he was able to make inroads on Benneteau's own weakening serve. He took the set 6-4.
Once Monfils gained momentum, Benneteau could not stop him. He tightened his return game a little more, and broke Benneteau twice, while saving both break points against his own serve.
Monfils will play Vince Spadea, who advanced to the quarterfinals on walk-over from Radek Stepanek.
