The big serving Ivo Karlovic will attempt to get his first ever win over France's Gael Monfils on Friday in Nottingham.
Gael Monfils is quick and he is a good retriever. Ivo Karlovic understands this fact quite well. He played the young Frenchman in Monte Carlo back in April. It would be one of the few times in Karlovic's career when he was unable to produce a single ace. Monfils won that match 7-6(8), 6-1. Clay, of course, is a different kettle of fish than quick grass, but Monfils will likely come into this match with quite a bit of confidence in playing Karlovic.
For his part, the Croat has traditionally had his best results on grass. He is the defending champion of Nottingham, and he pushed Rafael Nadal to the very brink last week in the quarterfinals of Queen's Club. He, in fact, got closer to beating Nadal (the eventual champion) than Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic managed in the semifinals and final.
Though Karlovic is the favorite going into the match, Monfils will have chances as long as the Croat does not serve perfectly, as he has been wont to do for the past two weeks. Monfils in three.
