7th seed Frank Dancevic had to work harder than expected to reach round 2. For a while it looks as though the big serving Taylor Dent would earn his first ATP win since beating Tomas Berdych indoors over 2 years ago
Dancevic had to hold off a serving barrage from Dent who certainly controlled the play with 8 aces and 11 double faults. The American's rust was evident but Dancevic looked strangely sluggish on serve and was broken midway through set 1
Dancevic found himself a break down in the second and looked on course for a shock upset but he managed to rally, twice breaking back as Dent's double faults started to multiply. From 3-4 he reeled off 4 of the last 5 games to level the match and Dent's chance was gone.
Serving at 71% in the decider, Dancevic started to pick his returns and set up a clash with Brendon Evans
5th seed John Isner became the first big casualty of the tournament, crashing out 6-3, 6-1 to Jesse Levine. Isner's towering serve-volley game made him one of the dark horses for this title but he struggled badly with cramp. After the stunning success of last summer, Isner's recent struggles continue.
Ben Becker put out Davydenko at Wimbledon but he was downed 7-5, 7-6 by Pakistani grass court specialist Aisam Ul-Qureshi today. If Qureshi was as successful on other surfaces he'd be easily top 100 by now but he relies heavily on success at this time of the year
