  • Young eventually shuts out Jun

    7/8/08 12:36 AM | David Cox
Donald Young ended his 5 match losing streak today with a hard-fought battle on the Newport grass. Over the first half of this season Young has done little to encourage hopes that he will become the new superstar American tennis yearns for

However he's coming into the part of the season where he made such big moves last summer. The hard courts await and Young enjoyed that winning feeling for the first time in 2 months today over dangerous qualifier Woong-Sun Jun 6-3, 2-6, 6-4

Both men struggled with their service rhythm today in blustery conditions and a single break earned Young the first set. Jun began to nail some big deliveries in set 2, upping his first serve accuracy to 69%, putting all the pressure on the American who went slightly off the boil. However there's a reason why Jun is ranked outside the top 200 and he was unable to maintain the quality of those heavy flat groundstrokes. The decider came down to just 1 break point, Young took his chance and that was another to seal a win which took a while coming

Young was the only seed in action on day 1 but there were a few slight surprises. Germany's Philipp Petzschner nearly sent Mario Ancic crashing out at Wimbledon when he pulled back a 2 set deficit before losing 6-3 in the 5th. He was expected to be a threat here with his aggressive serve-volley game but the stylish Austrian qualifier Alex Peya edged him out 6-7, 6-3, 7-5

Another giant-killer at Wimbledon, Simon Stadler took out dark horse Ivo Karlovic at SW19 during a run to the last 32 but back on the weekly grind of ordinary ATPs he was unable to summon the same inspiration against veteran Vince Spadea. The tour's self-styled rapper progressing 6-2, 3-6, 6-4
