  • Robredo wins a rollercoaster ride over Davydenko

    5/9/08 4:46 AM | Jonathan Morgan
In a wildly entertaining match with 111 total errors in 208 points, 13 breaks of serve, and 2h41mins of play, Robredo scrapes through.

    What an epic.

Robredo and Davydenko here played a classic clay court match under the Foro Italico lights. It started off very well, with a high quality of play in the first set as Davydenko used his angles and pace to upset Robredo and win the first set 6-4.

In the second, Davydenko's play lessened considerably as he began hitting errors left, right, and centre. Robredo did not have to do too much as Davydenko was giving him plenty of points all by himself. an easy 6-2 win for Robredo ensued. In the 3rd, Robredo continued to defend as best he could while Davydenko couldn't hit through.

The 3rd set had more twists and turns than a game of Twister. Robredo started by going up 3 break for 3-0. Daydenko then breaks back for 3-1. Robredo then gets 2 break points to go up 4-1, misses both and Davydenko holds for 3-2. Robredo then gets broken again for 3-3, then rebreaks Davydenko back for 4-3. A pair of holds puts Robredo in a position to serve for the match at 5-4. He of course gets broken serving for the match for 5 all, and the tiebreak is upon us. In the tiebreak, Robredo continued to plug away while Davydenko continued to lose his patience. At 6-4 for Robredo, after a fine rally, Davydenko gets an overhead to smash. He misses it horribly to give Robredo the match.

At one point, Davydenko had a match point on Robredo's serve. Robredo hit a serve that was questionably close to the line. It was called out, but the Russian saw it good and gave the point to Robredo. It went on to cost him the match, but the sportsmanship was superb.

Robredo will play Roddick in the Quarterfinals.

  • Thumbs up

Incredible defense from Robredo as he did everything he could do to force Daydenko to go for more and more and eventually a miss.

  • Thumbs down

Tough luck for Davydenko to end the match like that with such a horrible smash.

I missed seeing this match. But what a super gesture from Davydenko. He is normally such a cold character on court - hard to warm to even though he is a great player - but over-riding the call like that makes me like him much more.
