Switzerland's number two player enters the top twenty and the quarter-finals with an easy win over Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Juan Carlos Ferrero's moment of triumph in taking out an injured Rafael Nadal on Wednesday was short lived - only a day in fact. Ferrero was beaten handily on Thursday by the Swiss man Stanislas Wawrinka. With this third round win, Wawrinka moves up to number twenty in the world.
The scoreline makes the match appear closer than it actually was. Wawrinka was rock solid on his own serve; he was broken once in the first set, but was able to break Ferrero's serve twice. Wawrinka completely dominated the second set. The Spaniard simply could not keep up with Wawrinka's ground strokes, in particular his superb one-handed backhand which is getting better each year he is on the ATP tour. At the end of the match it was clear that the effectiveness of Wawrinka's game forced Ferrero, who is a good player on the dirt, into mediocrity.
Wawrinka will play James Blake in the quarter-finals and has a real opportunity to advance to the semis, as Blake is not known for his clay court prowess.
