In a rematch of their Miami match just a few weeks ago, this one couldn't have gone any more differently.
In Miami, they played a tight 3 setter. Here in Rome, Davydenko destroyed the Croat.
Davydenko played as solid a match as he possibly could. He knew he would need to as Ancic has got fire power off both wings and especially the serve. Ancic served at 80% today, but he was kicking them in more often than not.
However, Ancic came out a bit uninspired. He looks sluggish in movement and was being annihilated in the long rallies. Davydenko forced pressure on Ancic by hitting his shots quite deep. Ancic wasn't able to really do much to counter said strategy as he chose to send back a fairly weak shot which the Russian pounced upon.
Far too passive from Ancic to sum it up. Davydenko dreams of easy pickings matches like these. Ancic in Miami gave Nikolay tons of hard-hitting groundstrokes in a tightly contested battle, and should have done the same here if he wanted to win. Davydenko didn't even face a break point.
Davydenko will play either Robredo or Mahut in the next round.
Very impressive from Davydenko as he appears to be in top form.
Disappointing from Ancic. Not that he lost, but the energyless way in which he did it.
