  • Roddick the first into the 3rd round in Rome with win over friend Fish

    5/6/08 7:55 PM | Jonathan Morgan
It wasn't the most beautiful display of clay court tennis, but Roddick played intelligently to get the job done. He improves his lifetime record over Fish to 8-1.

On clay, neither play is comfortable. But the advantage was with Roddick from the start. Andy was able to use his serve to get himself a good start to each point, and used it to save the only break point he faced.

Mardy's wretched movement was exploited on many occasions by Roddick as Andy moved him around for a couple of shots, opting not to go for too much, only enough, until Fish had to go for a winner. A winner he usually missed.

Once again, Fish's serve was dreadful. At only 41%, maybe he would win some matches on a fast hard court. Certainly not on clay. Roddick got far too many looks at Fish's second serve and was able to tee off on many of them, winning over half the 2nd serve points. Fish was broken 3 times using the above strategy from Andy, and Roddick simply outsmarted him.

Roddick now gets a day off tomorrow before he plays his 3rd round match on Thursday

  • Thumbs up

Well done from Roddick as he played a smart match. He did what he needed to do and got the win.

  • Thumbs down

Poor from Fish as he looked on occasions like he was lost and had no clue what to do out there.

I never believed the fans or the press whenever they tried to write off Roddick as a brainless ball basher. Those kinds of players arent usually perched in the top ten for five years.

true, but I would not get worked up about a win over Mardy Fish on clay
