In Hamburg last year, Murray led 5-1 over Volandri before popping his wrist, having to retire, and miss an extended part of the season. He came back today with an easy 6-4 6-1 victory.
Andy Murray, much like Djokovic feels more at home on a hard or even grass court, but can still get some good scalps on clay, such as this one. Volandri's best surface is clay, so for Murray to win with such a scoreline is impressive.
As for the match, the first set was great quality from both players with smart tactical play in terms of angles and pace from both. Volandri's serve is known to be quite weak, but the clay made it difficult to attack than from say a hard court.
With Alex Corretja coaching Murray, a few things seem to have changed on the dirt. Unfortunately for Murray, the past few years on clay have been rough on him in terms of injury, so this is really the first real clay season he can play if he can stay healthy. He is surely hitting the ball with more confidence and harder than in previous years. Of course, it was just one match, and the next round matchup with Djokovic will tell us quite a bit about where Murray is on clay as well.
Good play from Murray against a fine clay courter
Disappointing from Volandiri, especially as he seemed to give up in that second set.
