It’s turning out to be the biggest week of Janko Tipsarevic’s career, he took full advantage of a 2nd set meltdown from Mikhail Youzhny to make his first masters series quarter-final
Tipsarevic started fast taking a 2-0 lead, Youzhny looked sluggish and was facing going 2 breaks down. A big forehand into the corner averted the danger and the Russian began to grow into the match as the Tipsarevic forehand started to disintegrate, breaking back for 2-2. A marathon 5th game proved the set’s turning point , Youzhny saved break point with an acutely angled backhand and held for 3-2 after 5 deuces. The forehand errors started to flow from Tipsarevic and although he vented his anger on the racket more than once, it was to little avail. Youzhny broke again and had little trouble closing out the set 6-3, finding a spectacular cross-court backhand on set point, struck from outside the tramlines.
It wouldn’t be a Youzhny match without some dramatic ups and downs and the Russian did not disappoint. Having been ripping winners on the run almost at will at the end of set 1, suddenly just keeping the ball in play became a real issue. With Youzhny’s coach watching on in increasing bewilderment, Tipsarevic found himself first 3-0 and then 5-0 up without doing too much. Serving at 0-5, the first 2 points really summed up the variability of Youzhny’s play, first he blasts a short forehand at least 10 feet long and then next point, executes a dropshot to perfection from the baseline. Tipsarevic sealed his first ever bagel over a top 15 player, making just 1 unforced error in the entire set
Growing in confidence, Tipsarevic really found his range on the forehand in the decider, dominating play with bludgeoning shots off that wing, very much like he’d done against Verdasco and Johansson. He broke to go 3-1 up and although Youzhny saved 2 match points at 5-2 , Tipsarevic was not to be denied and another huge forehand sealed it 3-6, 6-0, 6-3
