Igor Andreev upset the 15 seed and 2007 giant killer Guillermo Canas in the 4th round of Miami to reach the final 8 of Miami, 6-4, 7-6(6).
Igor Andreev held his nerves to beat one of the most mentally tough players on tour.
In the second set, Andreev went up a break but lost it. He then had a match point on the Canas serve, lost that, but was able to get himself together to win the tiebreak.
Throughout the match, Andreev was the far more aggresive player, especially with his high forehand to the Canas backhand which Guillermo was making quite a few unforced errors.
Andreev played a solid game and was able to keep himself together to score the upset. The first set and a half was some high quality play from both men, but the end had some sketchy play from both.
Andreev will play Tomas Berdych in the Quarterfinal on Wednesday. This is thus far his best Miami result.
Solid serving from Andreev and aggresive play, a good thing to see. Some mental toughness to win the big points all combined for the perfect strategy to take out Canas.
A bit dissapointing from the Argentine, who's 07 finals points will come off. Canas will look to rebound in the clay season.
