  • Canas survives Gonzalez barrage to reach Miami 4th round

    3/31/08 4:04 PM | Jonathan Morgan
Guillermo Canas was able to withstand the power and pace from the Gonzalez game to send Fernando home.

In a well played and entertaining match, Canas was able to sneak by Gonzalez in two close sets, 7-6(6), 7-5.

Gonzalez will remember this match most for his missed opportunities. He had 4 set points in the first set and served for the set in the 2nd. He converted neither opportunity. A raucous latino Miami crowd was really getting into this one as the Chilean and Argentine fans treated it more like a football match than a tennis match, with one man even asked to leave the stadium.

For much of the match, Gonzalez was playing his usual aggresive style of game with his backhand slice occasionally mixed in. Canas defended well, played a very clean match, took his opportunities when he could and was much more mentally strong on the big points. Case in point: Gonzalez was 1/7 on break points, while Canas was 2/3.

It was an exciting atmosphere and the crowd got all they could have hoped for including Gonzalez smashing his racket and receving a code violation following his 2nd set debacle.

Canas will face Igor Andreev in the 4th round.

  • Thumbs up

Very high quality match with a great atmosphere and crowd. Nothing more you could ask for.

  • Thumbs down

A tough loss for Gonzalez to take considering he was ahead in both sets and could have won in straights.

Did you know that... Arnaud Clement and Fabrice Santoro fought during 6 hours and 33 minutes in the longest match ever played, in French Open 2004.
