  • Second big scalp for Kiefer

Roared on by a frenetic home crowd, Nicholas Kiefer’s dream Hamburg run continued with a shock 7-5, 6-3 win over 4th seed Nicolay Davydenko. The 30 year old German is currently ranked 41 but his success this week will lift him way above that mark, back into a seeding position at the slams

Vast numbers of local fans have turned out to watch the German play this week and he’s given them plenty to cheer about. Today he was back to his hard serving best, 8 aces and a willingness to get forward whenever possible put Davydenko under constant pressure

As against Wawrinka, Kiefer made a flying start, breaking to go 3-1 up when the Russian put a forehand long. The lead didn’t last though, Kiefer saved several break points in the next game with some courageous serve-volleying and it took a special piece of athleticism from Davydenko to get back on level terms, sprinting the length of the court to track down a drop shot and flick it for a winner. However it was Kiefer who clinched the set in a tense game at 6-5 when Davydenko netted a backhand

The German was now on a roll and broke to go 3-1 up in the second and Davydenko never really looked like getting back in the match

For Kiefer its an amazing opportunity to make the semi-finals, to face an unseeded opponent in the last 8 of a masters series is a golden opportunity. He last enjoyed a similar run in Madrid last October where he made the semis before coming up against Federer. It’s Davydenko’s second successive 3rd round exit after losing to Robredo at this stage in Rome. He can’t have many complaints this week as he was outclassed for most of the match but will be frustrated at not going into the French Open with more wins behind him.
