Unseeded and unheralded Albert Montanes is through to the quarterfinals of the Masters Series Hamburg after crushing Janko Tipsarevic on Thursday afternoon. Next up for the Spaniard is the No. 3 player in the world, Novak Djokovic.
Albert Montanes made his first Masters Series quarterfinal, destroying fellows unseeded player Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 6-1 on Thursday afternoon in Hamburg. Although Tipsarevic came in as the favorite, the outcome was never in doubt.
As good as Tipsarevic was in the last two sets against James Blake on Wednesday, he was that bad this time on the court. The Serb's form in the first set was nothing short of dismal, and he struggled just to take the two games that he won. Tipsarevic sprayed errors off both sides, and most importantly he served an atrocious 32 percent. Putting in so few first deliveries especially damaged the No. 33 player in the world since he won a mere six of 17 second-serve points. He was even more hopeless against Montanes' serve, winning only five return points over the entire first set.
It was more of the same in set two, with Montanes playing well and Tipsarevic imploding. Montanes is not known as an offensive player, but he knows how to make opponents beat themselves and that's exactly what he did today. Tipsarevic was out of form on his own accord, but Montanes used a wide variety of spins, slices, and drop-shots to add to his adversary's pain. The Spaniard even fired several big forehand winners during the course of play, as Tipsarevic often left balls too short in the court that were asking to be crushed.
Montanes is going up against third-seeded Novak Djokovic, who won in Rome last week, in a Friday quarterfinal showdown. It will be the first career head-to-head meeting between the two players.
Montanes, as usual, is heating up on the clay. He also made the quarterfinals in Barcelona two weeks ago.
Complete collapse by Tipsarevic just one day after an outstanding performance against Blake.
