5/15/08 10:21 PM | Cheryl Murray
Anybody who was hoping that Nadal had miraculously forgotten how to play clay court tennis after his loss in Rome was seriously disappointed today. Nadal played the kind of tennis that won him the title in Monte Carlo four years running and Andy Murray was left with few options.
The opening set started with a few loose points from the Spaniard, and Murray held the first service game with ease. It did not take Nadal long to find his range, however. He broke Murray's next game to go up 2-1 on the strength of several very well placed forehands. As soon as Nadal found the sweet spot on his forehand side, Murray was in trouble. And just in case Murray wasn't quite sure who was in charge of the set, Nadal broke again at 5-3 to wrap it up.
In what has become a sort of pattern for Nadal, after winning the first set convincingly, he was broken in his opening service game in the second set. Nothing seems to ruffle Nadal on clay, though. He simply went about the business of breaking Murray back immediately. Another break of Murray's serve at 1-2 gave him the lead in the set. He called for the trainer at 4-2 for treatment of another blister, this time on his finger, but despite the blister, Nadal's game continued to improve as he pummelled Murray with his forehand.
A relentless Nadal broke one last time to secure the match. When asked how his blister was feeling, he said, “Yes. I'm fine. I don't feel 100% perfect because I feel it a little bit, but for sure it's enough.” He also said that he intends to play even better tomorrow when he plays his mentor and friend Carlos Moya.
Nadal is back to his normal genius clay court form.
Murray still can't seem to get a bead on Nadal, as he goes 0-3 lifetime against the Spaniard.

Did you know that... Jimmy Connors is the only player to have won the US Open on grass, clay and hard court.
