  • Gasquet struggles continue

Richard Gasquet’s travails continue, last week he received a drubbing at the hands of Peruvian journeyman Luis Horna now at the same stage in Hamburg he was outplayed 6-3, 6-2 by Andreas Seppi. It’s a far cry from 2005 when Gasquet strode to his first masters series final.

The Frenchman has always been a complex and at times vulnerable character but he seems to have been particularly affected by last month’s Davis Cup quarter-final against the USA. Gasquet refused to play the crucial 4th rubber against Andy Roddick complaining of various injuries and was slammed afterwards in the press by the French tennis federation president

Gasquet had an early break point which was saved by a quite outstanding backhand pass from Seppi with the ball almost behind him. After that it was all downhill for Gasquet, nothing really seeming to work in particular the dropshots which were never really disguised or executed well enough. With Seppi producing some inspired stuff at times there was no way back for Gasquet once he fell 2-0 behind in set 2 and the match was over in just 71 minutes

Like compatriot Amelie Mauresmo Gasquet has always struggled with expections in his home slam but on current form this could be a particularly early exit. “I am really disappointed, I wasn't in the game and I didn't play at all well,“ said the French no 1 with Roland Garros starting in less than a fortnight. ”I am not confident at all for Roland Garros, but you can never say never, I will try to do my best there, of course. I am not carrying any injuries, but I am just so tired. This year is totally different to 2005, then I was playing well, I was confident and I did well at Monte Carlo before I came here. Now I just need to get some rest and try to recover.“
