Nikolay Davydenko is through to the third round in Toronto thanks to a straight-set win over Tommy Haas on Wednesday. Next up for Davydenko is Nicolas Kiefer.
Nikolay Davydenko defeated Tommy Haas 6-3, 7-6(6) in one hour hour and 42 minutes in the second round of Toronto's Rogers Cup. He will next meet another German in unseeded Nicolas Kiefer.
Davydenko set the tone for Wednesday's match right away, breaking Haas in the opening game. The Russian lost only three points on serve--and not one on his second serve--in the entire first set so that one break was all he needed. Davydenko cruised to a one-set advantage before his opponent decided to make things competitive.
Haas made major improvements on his second serve and that helped him take care of his six service games en route to a tiebreaker. He had to save two break points along the way, as did Davydenko. Little separated Haas and Davydenko in the tiebreaker, but the No. 4 seed simply played better at smarter at the most critical stages. Some questionable shot selection and ill-advised drop-shots plagued Haas and a final winning return by Davydenko sealed the deal eight points to six.
Davydenko has won once in three head-to-head encounters with Kiefer. Most recently the German ousted Daydenko from the Masters Series Hamburg earlier this season in straight sets. On hard courts however, Davydenko is 1-0 against Kiefer, having routed the German 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 at last year's U.S. Open.
Davydenko won an amazing 77 percent of his second-serve points.
Slow start and finish for Haas, although everything in between was OK.
