  • Kiefer Delivers Another Upset Special in Toronto

    7/25/08 6:24 AM | Ricky Dimon
Two of the top four seeds at the Rogers Cup are out prior to the quarterfinals. First it was Roger Federer, now it is Nikolay Davydenko, who lost to Nicolas Kiefer.

Nicolas Kiefer still has Nikolay Davydenko's number. He had it then, and he has it now even at 31 years of age. Kiefer defeated Davydenko for the third time in four tries on Thursday evening with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory in the third round of Toronto's Rogers Cup.

This one was tight and hard-fought all the way through, and the first set was no exception. Neither man enjoyed a single break point until Davydenko finally broke through with Kiefer serving at 4-4. The Russian promptly faced a break point while serving for the set, but he saved it to take an early lead.

Davydenko raced to a break advantage in the second frame of play before the tide turned. Kiefer started making fewer unforced errors from the baseline and most importantly began taking his opponent's serves in aggressive fashion. That allowed the German to dictate play more and more and a second break of Davydenko finished off the set for Kiefer and set up a deciding third.

Almost nothing separated the two battlers throughout the last ten games of the match. It simply all came down to the fact that Kiefer saved the only break point he faced in the final set while Davydenko failed to save Kiefer's only chance. The No. 4 player in the world only lost seven points in his last five service games, but one loose game was enough for the rock-solid Kiefer to pull off the upset.

In the quarterfinals Kiefer will face James Blake, against whom he his winless in three attempts.

  • Thumbs up

Kiefer's amazing week of serving continued with 10 aces and not one double-fault.

  • Thumbs down

Another bad loss for Davydenko, who was up a set and a break.
