  • Flawless Haas Routs Moya

    7/22/08 10:10 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tommy Haas cruises past Carlos Moya in straight sets on Tuesday afternoon to reach the second round of the Rogers Cup. Next up for Haas is Nikolay Davydenko.

Only one veteran turned back the clock on Tuesday afternoon in Toronto. The other did not, and the result was a 6-3, 6-2 blowout for Tommy Haas over Carlos Moya. It took just 54 minutes for Haas to advance to the second round, where he will take on No. 4 seed Nikolay Davydenko.

Of course it's not like Haas had to turn the clock way back, as he has been in farily solid form this season, reaching the third round of Wimbledon and the quarterfinals in Indianapolis last week. Moya, on the other hand, is struggling mightily at 31 years old and those struggles continued at the Rogers Cup. The Spaniard dropped serve to fall behind 3-1 and he never came close to getting back in the set, as Haas lost just two points on serve. Haas also did not make a single unforced error until the seventh game of the match.

The second frame of play turned out to be even easier for Haas. The German surged to a 4-0 lead and coasted the rest of the way. He lost only four points on serve--making it a mere six for the match--and never faced a break point.

Haas and Davydenko are no strangers to meeting each other in huge matches. In fact this will be the first time they square off outside of a Grand Slam. The Russian has eliminated Haas from each of the last two U.S. Opens, both times in the quarterfinals. Davydenko also prevailed at the 2005 French Open, while Haas scored his only victory in four tries at the 2007 Australian Open.

  • Thumbs up

    Haas won 26 of 28 first-serve points.

  • Thumbs down

Moya has lost his opening match in six of his last eight tournaments.
