7/25/08 8:35 AM | Cheryl Murray
Scotland’s Andy Murray played Stanislas Wawrkina, the man who took him out of the Rome Masters-Series event earlier this year.
Murray and Wawrinka’s third round match was a quite lopsided affair. The first set featured the breaking down of the Swiss man’s backhand. The one-handed shot was consistently dumped into the net or pulled wide throughout. Wawrinka’s backhand is his bread-and-butter shot; it’s failure showed in the 6-2 scoreline.
The second set was a complete reversal of the first. Wawrinka suddenly began to play better and Murray’s level dropped to the point that he neglected to hold serve for the entire set and was subsequently held at love.
The best tennis of the match occurred in the third set. Murray struggled in his first service game. Wawrinka had two break points that he failed to convert, and the Scot needed four deuces and three game points before he finally held. The turning point of the set occurred in the sixth game. Once again, Wawrinka had trouble with his forehand and Murray was able to capitalize. He held onto the break long enough to serve the match out for 6-4 in the third.
Murray is slated for a blockbuster quarterfinal match against Novak Djokovic on Friday.
