Andy Roddick kept his chances of 5 Queens titles alive after battling back to overcome Robby Ginepri 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-1.
After a month out, Roddick looked understandably a little slow in the first set and took a while to hit his stride in the rallies against a confident Ginepri. He said after the match that the different movement on a grass court is the most difficult part of the transition from clay for him. That was the case in the first set but he still had chances to take it, twice leading by a minibreak in the tiebreak. Ginepri had 2 set points at 6-4 as Roddick put a forehand long but the 3rd seed saved both. However Ginepri got a 3rd chance and this time made no mistake, placing a volley out of Roddick’s reach to take a surprise lead
Losing that set just seemed to give Roddick extra fire and he rolled through the next two. More aggressive play, charging the net at every opportunity proved the catylst for Roddick’s change in fortunes, a sequence of Ginepri errors handing his opponent a 3-1 second set lead. Roddick never looked back, a huge forehand making it 5-1 and when he broke in the opening game of the 3rd with a sublime lob, the match was as good as over.
Roddick was pleased with the performance, the ever formidable serve earning him 15 aces and he didn’t even face break point. “After the first set I thought it was really good. It was kinda a tale of two matches. In the first set I felt I was a little bit behind on everything, a little bit slow just from not having played. In the next two I picked it up and probably played better than I thought I could have done right now, considering everything.”
