Novak Djokovic moved into the Rome semis for the first time, barely breaking sweat as Nicholas Almagro retired in their quarter-final after just 33 minutes.
The clay really takes its toll on the joints, with cheap points hard to come by it requires more physical exertion than any other surface. The players in this quarter have been particularly affected, yesterday it was Fernando Gonzalez who felt the strain, a leg muscle injury preventing him even taking to the court and an injury David Nalbandian sustained in his second round match has forced him out of Hamburg
Worryingly for Almagro it’s an injury to his right wrist, along with the knee the worst possible area for a tennis player to develop a weakness. He took to the court but never stood any chance, seemingly at first strangely out of sorts - struggling to get the ball anywhere near the court. Djokovic cruised through the first set 6-1. Almagro had called the trainer complaining of wrist pains midway through the set and after Djokovic broke to go 1-0 up in set 2, Almagro called it quits.
It’s a big blow for the Spaniard who’s enjoying his best season to date having won more matches on clay than anyone else and he was set to be a dark horse in the French Open and many picked him to upset Djokovic today. All those matches earlier in the season could have taken their toll though on his body. He could still feature at Roland Garros but as of yet, the seriousness of the injury is not known

Did you know that... Jimmy Connors is the only player to have won the US Open on grass, clay and hard court.
