Defending champ Tomas Berdych was able to easily win over Thomas Johansson to kick off his title defense.
The first set was rather easy going for the Czech, as he threw down 5 aces and hardly lost a point. He utilized his big serve to gain control of the point and then finished with a punishing groundstroke. Johansson did well to get two break points on Berdych's serve but was unable to convert due to some clutch serving by the Czech. Johansson did some good serving himself trying to stay in the set, but lost the one break point he had to save. With a player like Berdych and on grass, one break is lethal.
The second set was much more competetive as Berdych upped his level of play while Johansson was fighting to stay in each of his service games. Facing 10 break points in the set, Johansson couldn't save them all. Berdych faced just one break point, but other than that was flawless in the set. Johansson tried all he could to take it to a tiebreak, but Berdych's big game was too much for the veteran Swede.
Berdych also won his doubles match with Stepanek. He has a tough road to the final and will need to play well to defend his title.
Tomas Berdych played quite well to get this win but will need to keep it up all week if he hopes to defend the title.
This is now Johansson's 7th straight loss on grass. He hasn't won a match since 2005.
