He may be top seed here in Casablanca, but going on recent form Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was not expected to progress past round one. Montanes has made a career out of frustrating players and you could see him driving Tsonga to distraction with his retrieving skills on the slow clay.
Instead, the mecca of Moroccan tennis brought out the best in the Frenchman and he edged through 6-4, 7-6(10).
Tsonga has always possessed an almighty serve. Consistency has often been the issue in the past at lower level tournaments but you couldn’t fault him on that today. He made 76% of his first serves and required just the one break to take the first set.
After his runs and scalps taken in Barcelona and Hamburg, Montanes will be disappointed to go out so early in such a weak field. He could well have taken the match to a deciding set, missing a number of set points in the second set tiebreak.
Also in Tsonga’s section, surprise 2004 champion Santiago Ventura (now ranked 97) scored a notable 7-6(6), 6-1 win over Arnaud Clement. Clement's best results now generally come on the doubles court but he’s still a former top 10 player.
Rainer Schuettler weathered a huge serving barrage of 14 aces from 6th seed Chris Guccione. In true style, Schuettler wore his man down with relentless baseline hustling 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2 in just over two hours.

Tsonga is so sweet - he has such a lovely nature. I hope he secures a title soon!
