  • Benneteau sets up all-French final

    5/24/08 12:40 AM | David Cox
The lower ranked French players are coming into form at just the right time. Julien Benneteau, Roland Garros quarter-finalist 2 years ago, pulled off a shock 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 semi-final win today over 3rd seed Agustin Calleri

Benneteau made the worst possible start, nothing really worked for him in set 1 and he was broken 3 times. It looked like Calleri was going to just roll through, his backhand oozed class as always and his opponent was making far too many errors to remain competitive in the rallies

In set 2 it was the complete opposite, this time Benneteau breaking 3 times. He used his experience, cut out the errors and started to mix things up more, throwing Calleri out of his hitting rhythm.

The decider was quite close, the first time both players were producing good tennis at the same time. Benneteau continued his momentum from set 2 and took first blood, breaking to go 2-0 up. Calleri gave himself hope breaking back to go from 0-3 to 2-3 but Benneteau immediately re-established his lead for 4-2 in the next game and went on to wrap up the match.

Speaking afterwards he said, “This will be my first ATP final and I won my only ATP meeting with Gilles in Lyon last October. It's been a good week for me so far even though I'm here without my coach. The French players like to play in Casablanca.”
