  • Ferrer triumphs in 5 sets over Hewitt

    6/1/08 3:30 AM | Jonathan Morgan
In an expected baseline war between two of the finest baseliners around, David Ferrer was able to pull through.

The entire match was high quality. It was like watching a chess match. Neither player has a gigantic serve, so most of the match was spent in the baseline trenches fighting. Hewitt tried to out angle Ferrer and move in while Ferrer used his speed and firepower to not allow that to happen. Ferrer looked to move Hewitt around the court and finish off with a fine forehand.

Both players were thinking hard out there and trying to outsmart the other. The first set was easy for Ferrer as Hewitt's timing was off for much of the set. The 2nd and 3rd sets were much more competetive with the veteran Aussie pulling out wins. At the end of the 4th, Hewitt showed visible signs of being hampered by his hip injury. In the 4th, he looked to not be running down as many balls and tried to be more aggresive, ending points faster.

In the 5th, both played some phenomenal tennis, and Hewitt had a break point early on Ferrer, but was unable to convert. Hewitt served at 4-4 40-15 and then it all went down hill. A footfault called on him on a serve that would have won him the point followed by a wretched volley at deuce secured Ferrer with the tools necessary to break and hold for the match 6-4 in the 5th.

  • Thumbs up

Stellar play from both, and Hewitt looks like he can still play with the big boys, even after a long layoff.

  • Thumbs down
