In a bit of a surprise, Scotland's Andy Murray destroyed Argentine clay-courter Jose Acasuso in straight sets on Wednesday
Andy Murray seems to have worked out the kinks in his clay court game. The young Scotsman has been criticized by both Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic for playing too passively. This was not the case on Wednesday. Jose Acasuso has not been in good form for the 2008 clay season, but he is generally a solid clay courter, and for Murray to get the easy win should give him a much-needed jolt of confidence.
Murray came out of the blocks strong, breaking Acasuso in his very first service game off a blistering backhand return on his second break point. Acasuso pressed Murray to deuce in his next service game, but Murray reeled off a couple of aces to hold. The Scot was pressed again at 3-2, but unlike his previous clay court matches, this time Murray stuck with his aggressive game plan, and it paid high dividends.
Acasuso was completely dismantled in the second set. Murray certainly played well, but it would have been difficult not to look good with the dismal tennis Acasuso displayed. Shanked errors and double faults (four by Acasuso) were the story of the second set - Murray was just smart enough to capitalize.
The Argentine decided to fight again in the third set. He finally managed to hold in the first game of the third, breaking a streak of seven games for the Scot. In the end, however, Murray was just too good for Acasuso. At 3-3, Acasuso had another weak service game, and Murray was able to take advantage on his second break chance. Murray will play tough Spaniard Nicolas Almagro in the third round.
This was a fantastic display of tennis from Andy Murray.
Conversely, Acasuso played terrible tennis.
