  • Gonzalez Ends Last American Hope

Fernando Gonzalez takes out Robby Ginepri in the fourth round of the French Open on Monday, making it to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2003. Gonzalez's reward is a clash with Roger Federer.

It took a lot longer than it did last year, but the Americans are finally out of the 2008 French Open. Last hope Robby Ginepri saw his surprising run end on Monday at the hands of Fernando Gonzalez, who prevailed 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-1.

A far less accomplished clay-court player than the Chilean, Ginepri had to hope for something other than an on-fire day for his opponent in order to have any real chance. Unfortunately for him, he ran into the good Gonzalez this time around.

Ginepri had a great opportunity to take the first set, however, and who knows how the match would have changed if he had done it. Gonzalez sprinted to a 4-0 lead in the opening tiebreaker, but the underdog quickly stole the momentum in leveling the score at 4-4. That's a close as Ginepri would get throughout the rest of the match, as Gonzalez came up with the goods on the next three points to take it 7-4.

Ginepri's level did not really fall off greatly over sets two and three, but perhaps his belief wavered just a bit and who could blame him? Gonzalez simply got in the zone and never came out of it from the end of the first-set tiebreaker to the end of the match.

As for the upcoming quarterfinal showdown, Gonzalez and Federer have met on 11 previous occasions and Federer holds a massive 10-1 head-to-head advantage, including 4-0 on clay. Gonzalez, however, won their most recent meeting at last year's Masters Cup in Shanghai.

  • Thumbs up

60 winners, including 10 aces, as opposed to just 19 unforced errors for Gonzalez.

  • Thumbs down

Too bad that Ginepri could not make sets two and three as competitive as the first, but still an incredibly impressive and surprising tournament for him.
