A tactical war just as much mental as physical was the order of the day in this one.
El Aynaoui had the absolute perfect gameplan against the tempremental Gonzalez. Younes knew that his slice would cause all sorts of problems for the Chilean, much like it did against Del Potro the previous round. He executed the game plan of the big serve, wide angled forehands and tricky slice backhands to perfection for the first set and a half.
Gonzalez wasn't playing badly, but you could tell he was about to go off. At 6-3, 3-2, 30-0 with El Aynaoui serving, the Moroccan lost the plot. His slice started to sit up a bit, Gonzalez calmed down, and Younes' serve began to misfire. This allowed Gonzalez back into the match as he took the second set 6-4.
That momentum carried into the 3rd. El Aynaoui tried to keep himself together, but Gonzalez was relentless. Fernando played very solid tennis in the 3rd and kept his cool, not even facing a break point. He took advantage of his only break point to get the 6-3 set and match win.
Gonzalez reached the final and will play the winner of the Bolelli-Mathieu match.
A fine week for El Aynaoui as he and the crowd certainly enjoyed themselves each match.
N/A, too good a match.
