This match was supposed to have been a walk in the park for world number ten Stanislas Wawrinka. He took on his countryman Stephane Bohli, a man ranked 137 who needed a wildcard to get into the tournament.
Wawrinka made his breakthrough this year, cracking the top ten. He had his best results on clay, making a final in Rome and a semifinal in Barcelona. Despite all of this, Bohli gave him everything he could handle.
This match was not a typical clay court battle.. There was just one break of serve in the two hours and forty-five minutes that the two Swiss men slugged it out. The first and third sets were decided in tiebreakers. Wawrinka grabbed the first set without facing a single break point. Shockingly, Bohli stuck with Wawrinka shot for shot, just barely losing out 8-6 in the breaker.
The second set would play out almost identically to the first set. The two players took turns holding serve. Wawrinka had a couple chances to break the Bohli serve but was unable to convert. It was actually the number one seed who blinked first. Bohli got the only break of the match to take the second set 7-5.
Predictably, the third set went the distance as well. Bohli was not going to fold as many inexperienced players would. He made Wawrinka play another tiebreak to finally win the match. Wawrinka will play clay court grinder Guillermo Canas in the quarterfinals.
