  • Fed Strolls Into Hamburg Semifinals

    Another day, another fast, straight sets win for Federer as he reaches the Hamburg semifinals.

    Verdasco had been playing some brilliant tennis this week. He dispatched top clay-courter David Ferrer in the previous round with an excellent showing. Verdasco and Federer had only played once before, here in Hamburg three years ago, and this match went much the same.

    Federer began by doing what he has done all week. He started out strong and aggressive, as did Verdasco. The first set was a well-played affair by both men. Verdasco seemed to have picked a feather from Nadal's book by directing his lefty forehand with plenty of spin to the Federer backhand. Unlike Rafa, however, Verdasco was unable to finish points, missing too many putaways. He would construct the point well, but could not finish it.

    Verdasco didn't give up, however, and played well early on in the 2nd set, getting three break points. He was unable to convert, and midway through the second set Verdasco rolled over on his ankle and went down. From 3-2 on, his movement was obviously hampered and Federer was able to run away with it.

    Federer will play Andreas Seppi in the semifinals tomorrow.

    Well played by both men, unfortunate for Verdasco to suffer the injury, as he was playing extremely well.
