2 months without a win is a long time in tennis but Mardy Fish will be hoping he's put an end to recent struggles after breezing past Columbia's Alejandro Falla in just 61 minutes last night
Despite serving at just 43% Fish was always in total control once he'd broken to go 2-1 up and Fish's power hitting began to make it more and more one-sided. “I've felt good the past couple of weeks even though its mostly been first round exits.“ Fish insisted. ”It felt nice to have a first win on hardcourts in the summer.”
Denis Gremelmayr gave the stars of the game a few shaky moments on the clay this year, unsettling even Federer and Djokovic with his outrageous shot-making, taking sets off both men. However before last night he amazingly hadn't won match since April, more than doubling Mardy Fish's losing streak. The German downed Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-2 to earn a match against 4th seed Feliciano Lopez and was delighted to be on fast hard again “I love to play on hard courts. I had some problems in the middle of the match but I came back well. It will be a tough second round now against Feliciano, but we will see.”
2007 local hero Zack Fleishman went down 6-3, 6-0 to Marc Gicquel but the 28 year old was just pleased to be back on court after a career threatening injury. At last year's tournament Fleishman stunned Fernando Gonzalez and his run to the quarters took him to a career high of no 127. However things went all pear-shaped in February went a mountain biking accident left him with serious shoulder damage. Two weeks ago he struck a backhand for the first time in months and it's still an ongoing battle to regain full fitness. “I was absolutely exhausted. I felt like I would after a five-set match when it was 3-all in the first set,“ Fleishman said. ”I'm not quite in playing shape right now.”
