Ljubicic, Haase advance in Zagreb
1/31/12 4:08 AM | Cheryl Murray
Top seed and Croat Ivan Ljubicic kicked off his 2012 Zagreb campaign with a tough win over Karol Beck while Dutchman Robin Haase had a smoother path to the second round.
Ivan Ljubicic (1) def. Karol Beck 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3
Croatia’s native son Ivan Ljubicic had a tough start to his Zagreb bid. Despite serving up 15 aces and serving at 70% for the match, The Croat faced down more break points than opponent Karol Beck. Ljubicic fought off five of the six break points against him and managed to secure a single break of Beck’s serve. The difference in the match was the tiebreaker, which the Croat won 7-3.
Ljubicic will take on the winner of Michael Berrer and Marco Chiudinelli in the second round.
Robin Hasse (7) def. Kristijan mesaros (WC) 6-2, 6-3
Dutchman Robin Haase had an easy road to the second round. Croatian wildcard Kristijan mesaros, who is ranked 295th in the world, barely put up a fight. The underdog actually secured a service break in the opening set, but it was among three breaks that Haase secured. The second set wasn’t quite as messy from mesaros, but Haase was much better, not facing a single break point.
Haase will meet Matthias Bachinger in the Zagreb second round.
