Baghdatis, Youzhny advance to the Zagreb quarters
2/3/12 3:42 AM | Cheryl Murray
Marcos Baghdatis and Mikhail Youzhny moved into the final weekend in Zagreb with easy wins on Thursday.
Mikhail Youzhny (3) def. Grega Zemlja 6-1, 6-3
This was an impressive performance by No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia. Youzhny served at 71% for the match over Grega Zemlja of Slovenia. Zemlja is ranked No. 121 in the world, but he offered no resistance to Youzhny at all, making no progress on his return game and donating 4 service breaks to the Youzhny cause.
The Russian now moves into the business end of the tournament as he heads into the quarters against the big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic.
Marcos Baghdatis (6) def. Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-2
Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis is bouncing back from a second round loss at the Australian Open to Stanislas Wawrinka. Baghdatis had an impressive win over Lukasz Kubot. The Pole hasn’t had a great start to the 2012 season, but he had some great results in 2011, most notably he came through qualifying at Wimbledon to advance to the round of 16.
Baghdatis was in fine form on Thursday. The Cypriot staved off the only break point against him and secured three breaks of Kubot’s serve. Baghdatis’s win sends him into the quarters, where he will face 2011 Zagreb champion Ivan Dodig.
