Germany’s Michael Berrer took out an out-of-sorts Ivan Ljubicic to advance to the quarterfinals.
Michael Berrer def. Ivan Ljubicic (1) 6-4, 6-4
Germany’s Michael Berrer upended top seed and Croat Ivan Ljubicic to advance to the quarterfinals. The German seems to play his best in Zagreb; he made the final in 2011, which he lost to Ivan Dodig and appears on his way to another final weekend this year.
Ljubicic didn’t make a dent in the Berrer serve in the first set. The German didn’t face a single break point and secured a single break of serve to take the lead. Ljubicic got a break of serve in the second set, but he surrendered a pair to give Berrer the straight-set win.
Ivan Dodig (4) def. Marsel Ilhan 7-6(5), 7-5
Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan put everything he had into this first round match. He faced down 7 break points and fought off all but one of them, which Dodig only just secured in the waning moments of the second set.
The Croat, who is the No. 4 seed and defending champion, seemed to be just slightly better at the big moments. Dodig only allowed Ilhan a pair of break points for the match, both of which he fought off.
Dodig will take on Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez as the second round wraps up on Thursday.
