Blake, Young advance in Winston-Salem

James Blake and Donald Young are through to the second round in Winston-Salem, after posting straight-set victories over opponents Mikhail Kukushkin and Michael Berrer.

James Blake made a successful start in Winston-Salem, having ousted Mikhail Kukushkin in straight sets. The 31-year-old American lost a 3-1 edge in the first set, but regrouped to earn triple set point at 6-5. Blake built a 3-0 advantage in the second set, then closed the match in an hour and 15 minutes.
The veteran completed the evening with 7 aces and five of 10 break points converted. He will face 10th seed Robin Haase in the next round.

Wildcard Donald Young reached the second round, following his straight-set success over veteran Michael Berrer. The 22-year-old American broke to 4-2 in the first set, then took a key break to 4-3 in the second set. Young ended the evening with 4 aces and nine of 10 service games held through 68 minutes.
He is slated to meet 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the second round.
