  • Nadal rolls over Bellucci in Wimbledon opener

    6/27/12 3:25 AM | Ricky Dimon
Rafael Nadal starts slow but ends up cruising past Thomaz Bellucci in the Wimbledon first round on Tuesday. Next up for Nadal is a meeting with Lukas Rosol.

Rafael Nadal dropped the first four games of the match but stormed past Thomaz Bellucci 7-6(0), 6-2, 6-3 in round one of Wimbledon on Tuesday afternoon. Nadal struck almost twice as many winners as unforced errors (35 to 18) en route to a victory in two hours and 15 minutes.

The second-ranked Spaniard, who won the French Open but lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Halle quarterfinals, was lost in the early going. Bellucci, though, tightened up visibly after racing to a 4-0 lead. Nadal got both of the breaks back right away and eventually forced a tiebreaker, which he dominated seven points to zero.

Bellucci had squandered his one and only chance and from there it was all over for the underdog. The 80th-ranked Brazilian, who hardly tried in the waning moments of the first-set 'breaker, surrendered serve twice in the second and missed his only break chance.

Nadal, on the other hand, found the range in set two. He rifled a forehand winner to bring up set point and converted it with a scorching backhand return. The 2008 and 2010 champion got broken once in the third but added two more breaks of his own before serving out the match at 5-3.

Next up for Nadal is Lukas Rosol, who ousted Ivan Dodig in four sets.

Bellucci started with all guns blazing and not unusually, Rafa was missing his shots at the start bu t soon found his range. This was miles better than his 2010 start against Robin Hasse when he actually had to come back from 2 sets to 1 down to take the match in 5.

I'm sure it will make him stronger for the next rounds.

I agree, Rafa will have no problems reaching the last 4, he will get better and better as he always does.

He's such a good competitor on any surface..
Tsonga, if it comes to pass, will be a big big challenge, last year he plaid magnificently and he'll be looking to improve on that.
Haven't been able to see the beginning of the match in any highlight video as people tend to upload from the moment he's coming back after being 4-0 down but his 1st serve stats in the 1st set says it all: 53%

^^Is that it for Rafa?
Tsonga? Is there nothing else before a possible Muzz meeting?
And what of federer's cakewalk, he has literally no one to stop him before Novak.
Who has no one to stop him before Roger.
I didnt even recognise ferrer's draw apart from that Rastafarian!
I might sound bitter although I'm not (honest!)
But jeez this...is...ridiculous.

Nadal vs Bellucci - best match so far!

Like DUH!

Rafa and Ronaldo are playing tennis/footie. Rafa is hitting the tennis ball with his racket and Ronaldo is kicking it with his foot, very entertaining.

The Rafa/ Christiano tennis/footie should have been played on CC, it would have been more entertaining than some matches.

Spain had better win this match today so Rafa can be in a good mood for Wimby!!!!!

VAMOS!!!

Monalysa , 6/27/12 4:19 PM

Vamos Spain - we all know what Rafa will be doing this evening. Let's hope they win and our boy will get a boost from it.

Rafa could be playing Kolschreiber soon - he is quite a good player so Rafa will have to be on his toes for that one.
