  • Federer races into Wimbledon third round

    6/28/12 3:44 AM | Ricky Dimon
Roger Federer takes care of Fabio Fognini in straight sets on Wednesday at Wimbledon. Next up for Federer is third-round encounter with Julien Benneteau.

Roger Federer continued to cruise at Wimbledon as he dismissed Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Federer fired 13 aces and did not face a single break point en route to advancing after a mere one hour and 14 minutes.

The six-time champion had destroyed Albert Ramos in his opener and this one was just as fast and almost as big of a blowout. Federer served up another breadstick in the first set, yielding just a single game.

Fognini at least managed to get on the scoreboard three times in the second. The underdog Italian could have made things interesting when he trailed by only one break at 3-5, but he dropped serve to end the set. Federer's sixth break of the day came at 5-2 in the third and finished the match in style.

"I was serving well," said the third-ranked Swiss. "You're not going to get many chances throughout a set, maybe, against me when I'm serving well. I didn't think it was that easy of a match. I really tried to focus hard and made sure I played sort of a clean match, which I was able to do again today."

Federer will go up against Julien Benneteau in the third round on Friday. Benneteau got past Michael Russell in four competitive sets.

Hour and 14 minutes for 3 sets!? Great stuff from the great man, shows no remorse in blazing the lesser players off the court. Felt a little sorry for Fognini but there was nothing he could do about it.

This is the best start for federer in first 2 rounds..since 2004..he only lost 9 games..

fedex is playing really well...if he keeps serving well and check his UF ..then he is definitely going to lift his 17th major..

It's really to be expected. As Roland Garros is Rafa's kingdom, the same can be said for Roger & Wimbledon. This is his backyard, and one he fancies very much. I can't see him losing before the SF. He'll at least pick up solid points, whether or not he wins. So long as one of Rafa or Novak lose before the final, the rankings will be that much closer!
