  • Tsonga takes care of Hewitt, Kohlschreiber overcomes Haas

    6/27/12 5:13 AM | Ricky Dimon
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dismisses Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets on Tuesday at Wimbledon. Tsonga is joined in the second round by Philipp Kohlschreiber, who outlasted Tommy Haas in five sets.

    (5) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. (WC) Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

Tsonga never dropped serve and he saved all eight of the break points he faced to cruise past Hewitt in one hour and 58 minutes on Tuesday at Wimbledon. The No. 5 seed blasted 21 aces, won 82 percent of his first-serve points, and struck 61 winners to Hewitt's 12.

Hewitt, the 2002 champion, played well for the most part but simply had nothing with which to hurt his opponent. The veteran Aussie could have made it competitive had he converted some break points, but his only real chance was for Tsonga to have a serious off day. Next up for the Frenchman is Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who survived Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(4), 5-7, 10-8.

    (27) Philipp Kohlschreiber d. (WC) Tommy Haas 3-6, 7-6(8), 6-7(5), 7-6(1), 6-2

This highly-anticipated all-German showdown did not disappoint, as Kohlschreiber came back from multiple deficits to beat Haas in three hours and 19 minutes on Tuesday. Kohlschreiber fired an amazing 31 aces compared to only two double-faults and he dropped serve just twice in five sets.

Haas, the Halle champion less than two weeks ago, had a chance to finish this match off but he lost two of the three contested tiebreakers. After losing the fourth set seven points to one in a 'breaker, the 34-year-old finally went away. Two breaks were more than enough for Kohlschreiber, who set up a second-round meeting with Malek Jaziri.
