  • Baker story continues at Wimbledon, Rosol flames out

    6/30/12 4:54 PM | Ricky Dimon
The Brian Baker train rolls into the second week of Wimbledon as he dismisses Benoit Paire in four sets on Saturday. Next up for Baker is Philipp Kohlschreiber, who ousted Rafael Nadal conqueror Lukas Rosol.

    (Q) Brian Baker d. Benoit Paire 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3

The Cinderella story that us Brian Baker made its way into the Wimbledon fourth round on Saturday afternoon as the comeback kid took care of Paire in two hours and 11 minutes. Gone for almost six years due to injury, Baker has been storming into prominence in 2012 and booking a spot in the second week at the All-England Club trumps everything he had done previously.

Paire, who is also playing stellar tennis this season, made things interesting by breaking at 5-4 in the second set to level the match. In the end, however, Baker's return of serve was the difference. The 27-year-old American broke three times in the third and once in the fourth to take control. Paire pressed his opponent in his last two return games, but Baker fought off a break point at 5-3 and capitalized on his second match point with a forehand volley winner.

    (27) Philipp Kohlschreiber d. Lukas Rosol 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(6)

Like many before him, Rosol could not follow up a monumental win in his following match. Rosol, who upended Rafael Nadal in a five-set second-round stunner, bowed out to Kohlschreiber in straight sets after just one hour and 37 minutes on Saturday. The 100th-ranked Czech served at 71 percent, but he did a far worse job of taking care of his first-serve points than he did against Nadal and Kohlschreiber also abused the second serve to the tune of four total breaks.

Of course, Kohlschreiber had a lot do with this outcome. The in-form German fired 35 winners to a ridiculously low five unforced errors. He did not face a single break point the entire way while blasting 12 aces without double-faulting. Rosol raised his level slightly in the third, but Kohlschreiber took the tiebreaker eight points to six to seal the deal. Wimbledon's No. 27 seed will meet Baker for a place in the quarterfinals.

Rosol's out- oh what a surprise...not. Consistency is the name of the game and if he played like he played against Rafa all the time,he's be No1 not No 100.
Think Kohls would've troubled Rafa though, especially playing him the first week of Wimbledon. K is playing beautiful grass court tennis. His serve against Rosol was impeccable.

deuce, Marin is two sets up against Querrey. He may be Murray's next opponent, if both win their matches today.

lucky, I wondered if u were watching. Marin's playing nicely after a slow start :) I'm kind of flicking between matches, annoying so many goodies on! Oh if only Kei and Goffin had serves. Shortish guys at such a disadvantage unless they do.

Oh boo, spoke 2 soon and the sunshine surfer is back in the match.
If Andy gets past Baggy, not sure who I prefer him to face. Has lost to Sam on grass and Marin in a slam...whatever.

No not watching, just watching the scores. I'm watching Roddick vs Ferrer now. Yes, so many good matches today but can't watch all of them, what a pity. Nishi no match for Delpo, he's not in tip top condition anyway. Didn't get to see Tsonga's match which is now playing in court one. Watch very little of Tsonga this Wimbledon, wondering how good is he.

Actually wanted to see that Kohl/Rosol match but not shown here and I don't like to watch via livestreaming. I know Kohl is playing well this grass and clay season so I hope he can go far, maybe gives Tsonga or Fish a good challenge.
