  • Malisse continues Wimbledon run, Youzhny topples Tipsarevic

    6/29/12 11:39 PM | Ricky Dimon
Two tough third-round matchups feature seeds Janko Tipsarevic, Fernando Verdasco, and Mikhail Youzhny. Xavier Malisse, traditionally a strong performer at Wimbledon, is also seeking a spot in the second week.

    Xavier Malisse d. (17) Fernando Verdasco 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-1, 4-6, 6-3

Malisse is back in the Wimbledon fourth round after outlasting Verdasco in a back-and-forth affair that lasted three hours and 10 minutes on Friday afternoon. The 31-year-old, a semifinalist at the All-England Club in 2002, got off to an extremely slow start but began to recover when he took a second-set tiebreaker seven points to five. With momentum in hand, Malisse rolled through the third while yielding just a single game to his opponent.

Verdasco bounced back by cleaning up his serve in set four. The 17th-seeded Spaniard saved the only break point he faced to make his one break stand up, thus forcing a decider. However, Malisse had plenty left in the tank. The Belgian struck a mere one unforced error in the final set and broke once before closing things out on serve at 5-3. Next up for Malisse is six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer.

    (26) Mikhail Youzhny d. (8) Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3

Youzhny has quietly compiled a 22-9 record this season, but now he is starting to make some noise with his rock-solid tennis. The Russian booked a spot in the second week of Wimbledon by upsetting Tipsarevic in two hours and 26 minutes on Thursday. A clean ball-striking match saw Youzhny compile 38 winners and 14 unforced errors while Tipsarevic recorded 37 winners against 18 mistakes.

Tipsarevic became the third Top 8 seed to exit the All-England Club following Tomas Berdych and Rafael Nadal, but it was no real fault of his own. The eighth-ranked Serb struck 11 aces compared to two double-faults and he battled back nicely in the third set after dropping the first two. Youzhny, though, was simply the better player and he got back on track in the fourth. The No. 26 seed fired 10 winners against two errors in set four and needed only one break to close it out on serve at 5-3. Next up for Youzhny is a surprising fourth-round showdown with Denis Istomin.

I was so happy to see Youzhny playing such great tennis. I have always had a bit of a soft spot for him. I hope he continues to play really well as he is so good to watch. Congrats for the win.
