  • Tsonga sinks Fish, into Wimbledon quarterfinals

    7/3/12 11:26 PM | Ricky Dimon
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga comes back out a day later and gets past Mardy Fish in four sets to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Next up for Tsonga is Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga recovered from a set down to win a rain-delayed match against Mardy Fish 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon in the Wimbledon fourth round. Tsonga had trailed by a set overnight, but he looked like a different player upon resumption as he put himself one win away from a second straight trip to the semifinals.

The Frenchman got back on track when he took a tight second set in a tiebreaker. Fish played a solid set with 21 winners and 10 errors, even winning one more point than his opponent, but Tsonga made only three unforced errors in the same span.

With momentum in hand, Tsonga picked up the pace even more the rest of the way. The No. 5 seed had not been broken in three whole matches prior to round four and he did not get broken in the final two sets on Tuesday. One break in each frame allowed Tsonga to close out both the third and fourth on serve at 5-4.

"I played well enough to win," Fish assured. "I would have beaten a lot of players today. He's one of the best players in the world on this surface and one of the best players in the world, period.

"I was certainly satisfied with the way I competed and the way I played. He didn't play as well yesterday as he did today. I played better yesterday than I did today maybe. So who knows what happens if there's not a rain delay."

Tsonga will go up against Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Kohlschreiber, advancing out of Rafael Nadal's section, dismissed Brian Baker in straight sets.
