Gulbis crashes out after Berdych upset
6/28/12 4:29 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ernests Gulbis had a fantastic win in the first round over No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych, but the Latvian’s good form did not extend to the second round.
Jerzy Janowicz def. Ernests Gulbis 2-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2), 9-7
Ernests Gulbis actually won more points in this second round match than Polish opponent Jerzy Janowicz, winning 152 points to Janowicz’s 147. But it was the Pole who came through in the most important moments of the match. Janowicz was one bad tiebreak away from an early ride home, but he was able to take the fourth set tiebreaker to force a deciding set.
Janowicz was once again better in the important moments, as the Pole clinched the match with 9-7 in the fifth.
Richard Gasquet def. Ruben Bemelmans 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
Frenchman Richard Gasquet continues to quietly advance through his section of the draw. Belgian Ruben Bemelmans, who is currently ranked 131 in the world, never really got a foothold in this match.
Gasquet played clean tennis, with 25 winners and an impressive 9 unforced errors. He secured 5 break points, while giving up just 2 on his own serve.
Life gets much more difficult for the No. 18 in the third round, where he will meet No. 12 seed Nicolas Almagro.
