  • Youzhny outlasts Istomin, to face Federer in quarters

    7/3/12 4:21 AM | Ricky Dimon
Mikhail Youzhny gets past Denis Istomin in five sets on Monday at Wimbledon. Next up for Youzhny is a quarterfinal clash against Roger Federer.

Mikhail Youzhny survived Denis Istomin 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-5 in four hours and 16 minutes to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Monday afternoon. Youzhny converted five of eight break points while saving 11 of 14 break points as he set up a showdown against Roger Federer.

The two competitors alternated sets the entire time, and the decider was similarly back and forth. Istomin led by an early break in the fifth only to give it back at 4-3. The unseeded Uzbek then had break opportunities at both 4-4 and 5-5 to regain control.

Youzhny, however, held his nerve and managed to edge in front each time. Istomin delivered a clutch hold while serving to stay in the match in the 10th game of the set, but he could not do the same at 5-6. Youzhny broke to love for the win, sealing the deal when his opponent struck a forehand just wide.

"It was a really tough match for me against Denis, because he played really well," said the 30-year-old Russian. "He played consistently, I think, all five sets and he served well. So for me, it was very, very tough match."

Youzhny has now reached the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slams throughout his stellar career. He had previously been 0-5 in Wimbledon fourth-round matches.
