Janko Tipsarevic takes care of David Nalbandian in straight sets on Monday at Wimbledon. Tipsarevic is joined in the second round by Alejandro Falla, who saved a match point in an upset win over John Isner.
Janko Tipsarevic made surprisingly short work of a blockbuster first-round matchup with David Nalbandian on Monday at Wimbledon. Tipsarevic prevailed 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-2 in two hours and 28 minutes, setting up a date with American Ryan Sweeting.
Nalbandian was coming off a well-documented default in the Queen's Club final when he accidentally injured a linesperson. The veteran Argentine played well enough in this one, but he simply could not hurt a more aggressive opponent. Nalbandian struck 33 winners to 23 unforced errors while Tipsarevic fired 40 winners against only 20 mistakes.
Tipsarevic survived a tight second set in a tiebreaker then was off to the races in the third. Nalbandian put himself in a hole by failing to win the big points and he wrapped up his effort with one of nine break points converted.
Joining Tipsarevic in the second round are five-set winners Alejandro Falla and Denis Istomin.
Falla saved a match point at 6-7 in the fourth-set tiebreaker as he stunned John Isner 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(7), 7-5. The Colombian put in a first serve when he was one point from defeat and Isner could not find the court with his return. Isner did not move well late in the fifth set and it cost him with a final donation of serve at 5-6.
Istomin overcame an in-form Andreas Seppi 6-7(2), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 8-6 in three hours and 26 minutes. Seppi served for the match at 5-3 in the fifth but could not close it out and it was all but over when he dropped serve again at 6-6. With a real lead for the first time in the match, Istomin made no mistake on serve one game later.
Next up for Istomin is Igor Andreev while Falla awaits either Nicolas Mahut or Paolo Lorenzi.
